Chia Seeds
They’re not just for ch-ch-ch-chia pets anymore! Chia seeds have been used for thousands of years, originally harvested by the Aztecs and Mayan cultures. Packed with nutrients, vitamins, and healthy fats, chia seeds are a great addition to any diet. Add them to smoothies, pancakes, granola, yogurt, oats, raw desserts, salads, or to thicken up puddings, sauces, soups, jams, and as an egg replacement.
- Chia seeds are packed with fiber (10 grams per ounce), which is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Fiber is not digested in the body, and instead passes quickly through the digestive track; grabbing onto toxins as it goes.
- Chia can absorb up to 12 times its weight due to its soluble fiber, which fills up your stomach and makes a great thickener for sauces, puddings, and jams.
- Ounce for ounce, chia seeds have more Omega-3 fatty acids than salmon, which aids in protection against heart disease, promotes cell growth, and is necessary for normal blood clotting. Omega-3s are an essential nutrient for health that cannot be made by the body, and must be obtained through food. Eat your chia!
- One tablespoon of chia contains more calcium than a glass of skim milk and more antioxidants than blueberries. Crazy little seed right?
