Homemade Whipped Body Butter

in Lifestyle

You know how important it is to nurture your body with real, whole foods filled with pure goodness. Why should your beautiful skin be any different? If you’re filling yourself up with the best ingredients possible, why slather you skin with unpronounceable ingredients and synthetic gunk? Living whole and healthy not only means nourishing your insides, but nourishing your outsides as well. And that, my friends, begins with the skin.

Lotions, crèmes, potions, moisturizers, and more – how many are lurking around your purses and vanities? More importantly, have you checked their ingredient list lately? Around 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into the bloodstream, (just think of birth control or nicotine patches) so why on earth would we want to put artificial chemicals, fragrances, Parabens, phthalates, petroleum-based products, and so many other not-so-nice things on our bods? Such icky ingredients may be linked to hormonal imbalances, skin irritation, allergic reactions, birth defects, and even cancer.

So how’s a gal (or guy!) to moisturize? You can find tons of amazing organic and natural skincare products online, at your local crunchy granola store, Whole Foods, and even Sephora for certain brands. If you want to go completely au natural, make your own whipped body butter made with only 3 delicious whole food ingredients, and treat your skin to absolute heaven.

This whipped body butter falls somewhere between the categories of bliss and paradise. It smells like rich chocolate, it melts into your skin without leaving a greasy mess behind, and it leaves your skin hydrated, soft, and completely radiant. To achieve that silky, whipped goodness we’re using cacao butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. That’s it! Cacao butter is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and skin-loving fatty acids to make you glow, and it may even reduce stretch marks and scars. Coconut oil is also high in fatty acids, ideal for skin nourishment and hydration. Coconut oil has been shown to strengthen skin’s underlying tissues also while removing excessive dead surface skin – making your skin look luminous! Jojoba oil has a composition similar to skin’s sebum, allowing it to be easily absorbed into your skin, which results in smooth and silky skin. These three superstars work together to completely hydrate your skin and leave it feeling soft and absolutely amazing. Smelling slightly like chocolate isn’t too bad either!

Homemade Whipped Body Butter

½ cup melted cacao butter (or cocoa butter)
¼ cup melted coconut oil
¼ cup jojoba oil (or sweet almond oil)

To melt cacao butter and coconut oil, prepare a double boiler or place a glass bowl over a pot of simmering water. Add in cacao pieces and coconut oil and gently heat, until both are liquefied. Separate them if you need to measure after melting!

Remove bowl from heat and stir in jojoba oil. Place bowl in the freezer to allow liquid to slightly firm up – about 20-30 minutes. You’ll know it’s the right consistency when the liquid becomes slushy, pale yellow, and is no longer translucent.

Remove bowl from freezer and begin using a hand-beater to whip mixture. Beat the body butter for about 5-8 minutes, or until it begins to become whipped and fluffy, like butter or frosting.

Spoon whipped body butter into a glass jar with an airtight lid. (I like using small mason jars!) This body butter will last up to 6 months – enjoy it!
